From “I Do” to “Who Am I?” – My Journey Through Divorce and Back to Myself

Share Post

Thirty years ago on July 15, 1995 I put on a beautiful white dress, walked down an aisle and  standing in front of family and friends and said, “I do.”

I believed in love.
I believed in forever.
And I believed I had found my path.

Like many young women, I had dreams – not just of a wedding, but of a life built together. A home, children, traditions, a partnership that would endure all seasons. For 23 years, I poured myself into that life. We built a family, created memories, endured hardships, and celebrated milestones.  I gave my all to our family, our home, our future.

I was living what I thought was my purpose. My destiny.

Until it wasn’t.

And everything changed.

Nine years ago, my marriage ended, and so did the life I thought I’d always have.
I didn’t just lose a relationship.  I lost a sense of self. The grief was enormous.  Not just the grief of a marriage lost but the grief of losing the person I thought I was, and the future I thought I had planned.

I questioned everything:

Who am I now?

What’s next?

Will I ever be okay?

Where do I go now?

But slowly, I began the process of healing after divorce.

I allowed myself to grieve, to feel, to unravel – and then, to rebuild.

I began to rediscover myself – not the version I was in the marriage, but the version I had silenced for years.

I started asking different questions:
Who am I – not as a wife, but as a woman?
What do I want – not what we wanted, but what I want?
What lights me up? What have I been silencing inside me

Now, almost a decade later, I stand in a new place. I am no longer lost. I am whole.
Not because life is perfect but because I’ve learned to navigate my new path.

I can honestly say I’ve found myself again.
I discovered a version of me that never had space to fully emerge.
I’m stronger now. More grounded. More aware of my worth.
I’ve learned to trust my voice, to listen to my intuition, to live in alignment with my values.
And most importantly – I’ve found peace.

Today, I help others walk through the pain I once knew so well.
Not because I have all the answers – but because I know what it’s like to feel lost, and I know how powerful it is to be found again.

Divorce recovery is not a straight line. It’s a winding, sacred, often messy path back to your truth. And if you’re in that place of pain or uncertainty right now, I want you to know this:

You are not alone.
You are not broken.
You are becoming.

Your grief is real.
Your fear is valid.
And your future is not over – it’s just beginning.

And while this may not have been the path you planned, it may just be the path that leads you back to yourself.
